In just a few short days, our colorful fall scene lost all of its color and was replaced by a light blanket of snow.
Though I don’t miss 7 months of deep cold and snowy weather, I do miss snow very much, so I light up when it graces us with its presence.
Winter in Western North Carolina looks a little like a pile of twisted brown sticks all thrown together - like 98% of the time.
It requires a deeper level of awareness to appreciate its unique beauty, but it doesn’t last long - a few short months compared to Colorado’s 7.
Right now, there’s still some lingering color to enjoy, but most of the plant life has dried up and gone to sleep for the season.
I am way more present and aware on my walks in the winter, because I’m looking for beauty where most people just see the brown sticks.
I spend time enjoying the sky against the silhouetted shapes of the trees, and the wildlife.
This is the time of year when I really get to appreciate the birds - and squirrels (little pirates), because although the bears are still around, they’re less likely to come and tear the bird feeder to pieces in the middle of the day.
I stopped feeding the birds in every season other than winter after that happened.
I do my absolute best to keep the squirrels off the bird feeders, because they can empty them out in a couple of hours, but they’re still super cute and entertaining, so I also feed them as well.
So even though winter looks a little bare, it’s full of beauty and life if you make the time to look for it…Or if you attract it into your yard with food.
Hi, I’m Kristen!
I envision a world where you and I rediscover what it is to be human, through connection with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us.
